Marcus Andre Melo is a Professor of Political Science at the Federal University of Pernambuco and a former Fulbright Scholar at MIT. He was a Coca-Cola Company Visiting professor at Yale University, a Fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, and a resident Fellow at the Rockefeller Foundation. Professor Melo has co-authored Against the odds: politicians, institutions and the Fight Against Poverty, New York, Columbia University Press, 2012; Making Brazil work: checking the president in a multiparty system, New York, Palgrave, 2013 andBeliefs, Leadership and critical transitions, Brazil 1960-2012, Princeton University Press, 2016. His work has appeared in The Journal of Democracy, Perspectives on Politics, Legislative Studies Quarterly, Comparative Political Studies, Political Research Quarterly, among other scholarly journals. He is a also columnist for Folha de São Paulo, Brazil's largest newspaper.
